Article: Alcatel-Lucent reports employee data lost or stolen

May 27, 2007

An unencrypted CD containing personal information about thousands of Alcatel-Lucent employees and their dependants has been lost or stolen, the company.

The disk contains the names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and salary information for U.S. employees who worked for Lucent prior to its merger with Alcatel, as well as Lucent retirees and dependents of both groups, the company said.

The disk was prepared by Hewitt Associates, which administers Alcatel-Lucent’s benefits plans, for delivery via United Parcel Service to another contractor, Aon, Alcatel-Lucent said.

“If you are an Alcatel-Lucent U.S.-paid employee who worked for Lucent, a Lucent retiree or dependent of an employee or retiree, or a COBRA participant, then your information is on the disk,” the company said.

Once again we see an example of human negligence. Security processes are in place but a careless act has enormous impact.

USA Today: IBM loses retirees’ personal info

IBM, one of the world’s leading providers of encryption and other data-management technologies, is in the uncomfortable position of trying to solve its own mystery involving missing computer tapes with sensitive information about employees and records of customer transactions.

A letter sent to those affected said the tapes held archival information “such as your Social Security number, your dates of employment with IBM, birth date, contact information such as your address, and your IBM work history.”

May 18, 2007

Within my office I can usually determine team availability to attend my meetings by looking it up in Microsoft Outlook. But that doesn’t work for clients and vendors outside our corporate network.

I’m saving a lot of time using these free online Web applications to coordinate schedules before officially booking the meeting and resources.
